Transportation Career Day, Saturday, October 19 at Owens Workforce and Community Services Division

Owens Community College will offer area residents the opportunity to learn about exciting careers available within the growing transportation industry as the College hosts Transportation Career Day on Saturday, October 19.

The Transportation Career Day is from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the College's Workforce and Community Services Division Room 167, which is located on Tracy Road in Northwood.

"Transportation Career Day is a excellent opportunity for individuals, who have aspirations of pursuing careers in the transportation industry, to talk to the College's faculty about the various high-tech educational programs offered at Owens Community College," said Jim Kronberg, Owens Director of Special Projects for the Workforce and Community Services Division.

Among the programs highlighted during Transportation Career Day will include the Workforce and Community Services Division's Truck Driving Certificate Program. Students interested in attending this program will learn how to operate tractor-trailer equipment through over-the-road training on city, county and state highways. Following successful completion of the 200-hour course, the College will assist graduates in finding employment.

Attendees also can learn how to become a trained freight railroad conductor through the Owens Freight Train Conductor Program. The five-week program teaches students to supervise switching railroad tracks, loading and unloading cars and inspecting all equipment on cars prior to departures. Individuals also will gain experience making minor repairs to railcars, which includes replacing heavy coupling parts or air brake hoses.

In addition, Owens faculty and staff from the College's Transportation Technologies department will be available to answer questions for those interested in careers as automotive-diesel, auto collision repair, agricultural equipment and construction equipment technicians. Owens Transportation Technologies currently offers seven degree and four certificate programs.
