Two Owens Student-Athletes Named Academic All-Americans

Your Success Starts Here Two Owens Community College student-athletes have been recognized as Division III Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and on the athletic playing field.

Sophomores Stacy Cowell of Rossford and Mel Stachura of Erie, Michigan, are the tenth and eleventh student-athletes, since 1994, to receive this prestigious award at Owens.

"Stacy and Mel have worked very hard since they realized making the Academic All-American team was a possibility two years ago," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express Athletic Director. "They were determined and dedicated to succeed on and off the field. I'm very proud they are being recognized for their fine efforts."

During the 2001 softball season, Cowell set Owens records for total hits (50), doubles (14), runs scored (40) and RBIs (38) within Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) games and led the NJCAA national rankings in RBIs (70). The third baseman also was named Owens Most Valuable Player and received the Coach's Award. A Cardinal Stritch High School graduate, she maintained a 3.71 grade point average during the 2000-2001 academic year.

Stachura, a St. Francis de Sales High School graduate, is a pitcher on the baseball team. His 2001 season accomplishments include tossing the first no-hitter in Owens history and ranking No. 7 in earned run average (2.88) within the OCCAC. During the 2000-2001 academic year, he achieved a 3.63 grade point average.

Owens Community College is one of the 84 and 89 member schools participating in baseball and softball at the NJCAA Division III level.

In addition, Owens athletics led the OCCAC with 16 student-athletes receiving Academic All-Conference Honors. This marks the third time Owens has received the conference award for scholastic excellence.
