Owens Volleyball Signs Athletes to First-Ever Scholarships

Your Success Starts Here Owens Community College has signed 10 student-athletes to the first-ever volleyball scholarships in the program's history.

The volleyball program is moving from Division III to Division II next season. The change allows the College to offer scholarships to pay for tuition, fees and books for its student-athletes. Last season, the Lady Express finished the year ranked No. 1 among NJCAA Division III teams and placed third for the second time at the national tournament. The Lady Express had a 46-7 record and also won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title with a 15-0 mark.

"All Owens athletic teams will now have the opportunity to offer scholarships to high school students in their respective sport," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express Athletic Director. "Moving Owens Express intercollegiate sport teams to the NJCAA Division II level will give the College a better advantage in regards to the recruitment of top scholar athletes from the surrounding area, making our teams even more competitive."

Besides the volleyball program, Owens' men's soccer, men's baseball and women's softball programs also are moving to Division II for the 2001-2002 season. The College's men's and women's basketball programs already play at the Division II level.

Student-athletes receiving volleyball scholarships include:

  • Nichole Borck of Ottawa Lake, Michigan, a Whiteford High School graduate.
  • Ashley Brough of Genoa, an Eastwood High School graduate.
  • April E. Gladieux of Perrysburg, a Rossford High School graduate.
  • Dana L. Juhnke of Holland, a Notre Dame Academy graduate.
  • Kelli A. Klein of Holland, a Springfield High School graduate.
  • Cindy Missler of Toledo, a Start High School graduate.
  • Sandra L. Peer of Northwood, a Clay High School graduate.
  • Betsy Revenaugh of Oregon, a Clay High School graduate.
  • Stacy Smith of Pandora, a Pandora Gilboa High School graduate.
  • Jodi Young of Toledo, a Start High School graduate.

The Owens volleyball program is led by first year Head Coach Sonny Lewis. In 22 seasons at Springfield High School, he won 373 matches and seven Northern Lakes League, 15 sectional, six district and two regional championships. Two of his Blue Devil teams played in the state semifinals.

Owens Community College will host the Division II NJCAA National Volleyball Championship for the next four years beginning with this November. Owens hosted the previous three Division III tournaments, including last fall at the College's new $9.3 million Student Health & Activities Center.
