Interested student-athletes are invited to the open tryouts for the Owens Community College men's basketball team 1-4 p.m. Saturday, August 18 at the Student Health & Activities Center (SHAC) on the Toledo-area Campus, Oregon Road.
The Express finished the 2000-2001 season with a 31-4 overall record, capturing the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) championship and reaching the No. 1 NJCAA national ranking. Head Coach Jim Welling also won his 400th game during the season and now has an all-time record of 415-96 at the College.
Eight players from last year's team have signed with area four-year colleges and universities to continue their basketball careers. The Express student-athletes include Rodney Hughes (Eastern Michigan University), Lamar Chears (Armstrong Atlantic State University), Chris Fidler (Defiance College), Chris Reid (Wilberforce University), Isaac Hubbard (Lincoln Memorial University), Jeremy King (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne), Doug Whiteman (West Liberty State College) and Joe Shepherd (St. Bonaventure University).
