Owens Community College has signed 11 student-athletes to the first-ever
soccer scholarships in the program's history.
The soccer program is moving from Division III to Division II this fall, which allows the College to offer scholarships to pay for tuition, fees and books for its student-athletes. Led by Head Coach Art Johnson, the Express return three players, including Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) leading goal scorer (23) Fabio Cardoso, to a squad which finished with a 6-12-3 record during the 2000 season. Now entering its fourth season as an Owens athletic program, the Express will look to improve upon a fourth place finish within the OCCAC.
"All Owens athletic teams will now have the opportunity to offer scholarships to high school students in their respective sport," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express Athletic Director. "Moving Owens Express intercollegiate sport teams to the NJCAA Division II level will give the College a better advantage in regards to the recruitment of top scholar athletes from the area, making our teams even more competitive."
Besides the soccer program, Owens women's volleyball, men's baseball and women's softball programs also are moving to Division II for the 2001-2002 season. The College's men's and women's basketball programs already play at the Division II level.
