Owens Community College women's volleyball will open its season this weekend with a tournament Friday and Saturday at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellen, Illinois.
The Owens volleyball program is led by first year Head Coach Sonny Lewis. In 22 seasons at Springfield High School, he won 373 matches and seven Northern Lakes League, 15 sectional, six district and two regional championships. Two of his Blue Devil teams played in the state semifinals.
This year, the volleyball program is moving from Division III to Division II. The change allows the College to offer scholarships to pay for tuition, fees and books for its student-athletes. Last season, the Lady Express finished the year ranked No. 1 among NJCAA Division III teams and placed third for the second time at the national tournament. The Lady Express had a 46-7 record and also won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title with a 15-0 mark.
The Lady Express roster includes sophomores: Cindy Missler of Toledo (Start High School), Dana Juhnke of Holland (Notre Dame Academy), April Gladieux of Perrysburg (Rossford High School), Sandra Peer of Northwood (Clay High School) and Betsy Revenaugh of Oregon (Clay High School).
The freshmen players are: Ashley Brough of Genoa (Eastwood High School), Jodi Young of Toledo (Start High School), Nichole Borck of Ottawa Lake, Michigan, (Whiteford High School), Heather Inderrieden of Delta (Delta High School), Stacy Smith of Pandora (Pandora Gilboa High School), Kelli Klein of Holland (Springfield High School) and Stacy Schwierking of Oregon (Clay High School).
The Lady Express first play at home September 8-9 hosting the Owens Express Classic volleyball tournament.
