Owens Hosts Cincinnati State in OCCAC Basketball Showdown

Owens Community College and Cincinnati State will play a men's and women's basketball doubleheader Saturday in pivotal matchups of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference's (OCCAC) top teams.

The women's game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 3 p.m. at the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) on the Toledo-area Campus. Admission is free.

The Express, ranked third in the latest national poll, are 20-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference. Coach Jim Welling's squad defeated Cincinnati State 98-70 on January 5. The Surge is 17-3 overall and also is 6-1 in the conference.

The Lady Express is 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the conference. Coach Mark Henry's team lost to Cincinnati State 61-57 on January 5. The Surge is 16-4 overall and leads the conference with a 7-0 record.

"This Saturday's games have the makings of some very exciting basketball," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express Athletic Director. "Throughout both schools' basketball history in the conference, Owens and Cincinnati State inevitably seem to be vying for the men's and women's basketball conference titles each year, which has created a friendly rivalry. Both games this year once again are critical contests to determining conference championships."

At halftime of the women's basketball game, the Lady Express women's volleyball team will be honored, while the Express men's soccer team will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game.

This coming week the Express and Lady Express both will play two conference games. On Wednesday, January 30, both teams will travel to Sinclair Community College. The men will play at 5 p.m. followed by the women at 7 p.m. The two teams will entertain Cuyahoga Community College on Saturday, February 2. The Lady Express and Express will play at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
