Area junior high and high school cheerleading squads are invited to participate in the inaugural Owens Cheerleading Competition Sunday, February 24 at Owens Community College. This event is sponsored by the Owens Express cheerleading and dance team.
The competition begins at 11 a.m. in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) on the Owens Toledo-area Campus, Oregon Road.
"Cheerleading squads will have the opportunity to test their ability against some of the best cheerleading squads in Northwest Ohio to see which schools have the most spirit, energy and enthusiasm incorporated into their routines," said Tracy Lynne Reitz, Owens Cheerleading and Dance Team Head Coach.
Led by Reitz, the Owens Express cheerleaders and dance team is a cheer/dance mounting squad, which performs halftime routines and sideline chants and cheers during the men's basketball games.
Cheerleading squad participants must be enrolled in grades 7-12. All-star squads are welcome. Divisions for competition include Junior High School, Freshman, Small Varsity (for Junior Varsity squads), Large Varsity (mount), Large Varsity (non-mount), Small All-Star Varsity (for Junior Varsity squads) and Large All-Star Varsity.
Routines performed by each squad must be two minutes and 30 seconds in length with a maximum of one minute, 30 seconds for the music section. The routine must include one cheer and one chant. Spotters will be provided by the College. Owens cheerleaders will judge all divisions with the top three teams in each division receiving awards.
The cost of the clinic is $25 per squad or $50 for three squads from one school. Registration deadline is Saturday, February 16.
