The Owens Community College men's basketball team begins its postseason run toward a third national title as the Express compete in the NJCAA Region XII Men's Basketball Championship qualifying tournament at Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Tuesday-Saturday, March 5-9.
The Express, coached by Jim Welling, take a 28-3 record into the single elimination tournament, where they will play the winner of the Kalamazoo Valley Community CollegeMuskegon Community College game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7. If they advance, the Express would play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9. Welling's teams have won six Great Lakes Region XII championships to qualify for the national tournament. They won national championships in 1992 and 1993 and finished as national runner-up in 1994.
Owens, ranked third in the final regular season NJCAA Division II poll, placed second last year in the NJCAA Region XII Men's Basketball Championship.
This past weekend in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference state basketball championships, Coach Welling's team defeated Lakeland Community College 72-67 in a semi-final contest, advancing to the finals where they were defeated by Cincinnati State 84-74. The Express won the OCCAC regular season title this season.
The NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship will be played March 20-23 in Danville, Illinois.
