Owens Community College Volleyball Player
Named NJCAA All-American
Owens Community College womenís volleyball player Sandra Peer of Oregon has been named Second Team All-American.
The award was announced at the Collegeís fall athletic banquet for the Owens Express womenís volleyball and menís soccer programs.
This marks the seventh consecutive year that at least one Owens volleyball player has received All-American honors. Peerís other honors included Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) "Player of the Year", NJCAA All-Region XII, as well as Owens Co-Most Valuable Player. She also was Most Valuable Player of the Owens Express Classic and a member of the Lakeland Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Peer, a sophomore middle blocker from Clay High School, holds the Owens volleyball record with 812 kills for a career and tied Jaime Banners for the career record with 400 blocks. This season, Peer was the team leader with 411 kills, 178 blocks and 556 digs and ranked No.19 in nation with a hitting efficiency of 37.37 percent.
Led by second year Head Coach Sonny Lewis, the Express completed their season with a 46-11 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season. The program captured its third consecutive OCCAC regular season and tournament championships, finishing with an overall 15-0 conference record (OCCAC regular season and tournament matches). The Express was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally in the NJCAA Womenís Volleyball poll.
The menís soccer program, led by Head Coach Art Johnson, recently completed its fifth season as an Owens athletic program. The Express finished with 11-9 overall record and a 5-3 mark (second place) in the OCCAC. Johnsonís squad advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XII Championships before losing to Macomb Community College 5-4 in a shootout.
