Owens Community College Assists Students Called to Serve Their Country

As the possibility of war against Iraq becomes more eminent, many area colleges and universities are faced with the reality that students could be among those called to active duty. For reservists who currently are pursuing their education, Owens Community College is committed to assisting them in fulfilling their military commitment.

"Owens Community College is taking a proactive approach to the potential conflict in the Middle East by providing the utmost support to each student called to serve our country," said Dr. Paul Unger, Provost of Owens Community College.

Last week, the Pentagon announced a mobilization of 16,979 reservists and National Guard members, bringing the total number of call-ups to 111,603 in the past several months. That total is the largest number since the September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks, and will likely grow to as many as 265,000 - the number mobilized for the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

According to Dr. Bill Ivoska, Owens Interim Vice President of Student Services, individuals who are called to active duty should contact the College's Veterans Representative or fax a copy of the military orders to the Financial Aid Office, ensuring that they receive a full refund on their paid Spring Semester tuition and fees.

"Owens Community College has implemented the following procedure to allow for a student's smooth transition from college to military service," Ivoska stated. "Once the College receives the student's military orders, an Owens representative will complete the proper paperwork to release the service member from college courses. The College also suggests that any reservist with prior student loans contact their servicing agents and request a forbearance on their loan."

In recent months, approximately 30 Owens students and one staff member from the Toledo-area and Findlay-area Campuses have been called to serve their country in the military.

For additional information, contact Owens' Veterans Representative, Joanne Evans, at 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7342 or (567) 661-7342. Reservists called to active duty can fax their military orders to the Financial Aid Office at (567) 661-7418.

Owens Community College is the fastest-growing higher educational institution in Northwest Ohio with 24 consecutive semesters of enrollment increases. On the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses, Owens serves more than 38,000 credit and non-credit students making it the number one choice for new college students. Owens is committed to providing small classes, personal attention and unmatched affordability. Owens Community College offers over 130 program areas in Agriculture, Business, Fine and Performing Arts, Health, Public Service, Skilled Trades, Industrial and Engineering Technologies. Owens students also can earn the first two years of a bachelor 's degree with a smooth transfer to any area four-year college or university.
