Owens Community College Offers English as a Second Language Courses

Area residents interested in enhancing their English listening, reading, writing and speaking skills now can pursue such an educational opportunity by enrolling in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offered at Owens Community College.

The new ESL Program course offerings will be available to students on the College's Toledo-area Campus during the upcoming Summer Semester.

"Owens Community College establishing the new English as a Second Language courses will enable individuals whose first language is not English to acquire the necessary skills, allowing them to pursue a college education and their career aspirations," said Marge Bartelt, Owens Chair of Developmental Education. "The courses are designed to serve area residents of all ages and backgrounds, as well as immigrants from all over the world and international students."

Individuals enrolling in the College's ESL Program will receive expert instruction from experienced instructors and professors within the areas of listening, reading, speaking and writing as preparation for college level study in academic English. Tutors also are on hand to assist students in heightening their English skills.

According to Bartelt, students completing the ESL courses will be able to apply the knowledge and skills obtained toward one of the College's many certificate or degree programs.

Among the new courses offered are two levels of writing (ESL 100 and 101), reading (ESL 102 and 103) and speaking and listening comprehension (ESL 104 and 105). An advanced grammar course (ESL 106) also is available.

All students participating in the new program will be scheduled into appropriate ESL courses based upon completing a proficiency placement test as part of the College's admissions process.

For additional information about the College's new ESL courses, call (567) 661-7528 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7528.
