Owens Community College Signs Baseball Student-Athletes to Scholarships

Owens first-year student-athletes for baseball include (back row, left to right) John LoCascio (Assistant Coach), Kyle Blachuta, Head Coach Bob Schultz, David Quiroga, Scott Tucker (Assistant Coach), (front row, left to right) Mike Shaneck, Derek Kozlowski, Gary Tscherne and Jon Reynolds. Not pictured are Tom Hunyor and B.J. Ogden. Owens Community College has signed eight first-year student-athletes to baseball scholarships for the upcoming NJCAA intercollegiate season.

Led by second-year Head Coach Bob Schultz, the baseball program is beginning its third year at the Division II level. Participating in intercollegiate athletics at the Division II level allows the College to offer scholarships to pay for tuition, fees and books for its student-athletes.

Last season, the Express completed the year with a 38-23 overall record and a 14-6 mark (second place) in the regular season standings of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). The 38 victories mark the highest win total in program history. Owens men's baseball finished the regular season ranked No. 24 in the NJCAA Division II poll.

"The exceptional skills of each first-year student-athlete will complement a very experienced group of players returning from last year's successful ballclub," said Schultz. "With the addition of the incoming first-year players, I anticipate the baseball program achieving another record-breaking season."

Schultz added, "This year's baseball team possesses a strong combination of athletic abilities, which will allow Owens to compete for an OCCAC regular season and tournament championship."

First-year student-athletes receiving baseball scholarships include:
  • Kyle Blachuta of Bloomdale is a graduate of Elmwood High School. He is the son of Curt and Shelley Blachuta. (Pitcher and Outfield)
