Owens Community College Named OCCAC All-Academic Conference Champion
Owens Community College's Athletic Program is being honored for its academic excellence by receiving the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) All-Academic Award for the 2002-03 academic year. This marks the fourth time in the College's history that it has earned the award.
The already prestigious accomplishment also follows Owens capturing the OCCAC All-Sports Award earlier this year. Academic years in which the Owens Express has received both awards are 1999-2000 and 2000-01.
"I am very proud of our student-athletes, not only for their outstanding performance during intercollegiate competition but also for their strong work ethic within the classroom," said Michael Rickard, Owens Director of Athletics. "The academic success of our student-athletes would not have been possible without the guidance of Owens' excellent faculty and outstanding coaching and support staffs."
Selection criteria for the All-Academic Award is based upon the highest percentage of student-athletes within the OCCAC achieving a 3.3 GPA or higher. Owens' athletic programs earned the highest honor with 22 percent of its student-athletes attaining a 3.3 GPA or better.
During the 2002-03 academic year Owens Express had several scholar-athletes on five of its teams. Among the athletic teams with scholar-athlete recipients were men's baseball (six), women's basketball (five), women's softball (four), women's volleyball (three) and men's soccer (two). Four student-athletes also were named NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
Owens has been a member of the OCCAC for the past 16 years. The nine other member schools comprising the OCCAC are Clark State Community College, Cincinnati State Community College, Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Edison State Community College, Lakeland Community College, Sinclair Community College, Southern State Community College and Terra Community College.
