Owens Hosts Cheerleading Competition For Youth and High School Students, Feb. 15
Area cheerleading teams have the opportunity to test their ability against some best squads in Ohio as Owens Community College hosts a Cheerleading Competition on Sunday, February 15.
Sponsored by Owens' Cheerleading and Dance Team, the competition is from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the College's Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from Downtown Toledo.
"I anticipate a very exciting day of cheerleading with each team incorporating a lot of spirit, energy and enthusiasm into their routines," said Tracy Reitz, Owens Cheerleading and Dance Team Head Coach. "More than 30 cheerleading squads ranging from high school varsity to pee wee are expected to participate in the competition."
Cheerleading squad participants must be between the ages of 5-8 or enrolled in grades 9-12. Divisions for the competition will include Pee Wee, Junior Varsity Small, Junior Varsity Large, Varsity (mount), Varsity (non-mount), Individual and Partner Stunt Group, Recreational League Group, Pee Wee All-Star, Open All-Star, All-Star Small and All-Star Large.
Routines performed by each squad will be a required two minutes and 30 seconds in length with a maximum of one minute and 30 seconds for the music section. The routine must include one cheer and one chant. Spotters will be provided by the College. University of Findlay cheerleaders will judge all divisions with the top three teams in each division receiving awards.
Led by Reitz, the Owens Cheerleading and Dance Team is a cheer/dance mounting squad, which performs halftime routines and sideline chants and cheers during the men's basketball games. Since 2001, the squad has participated in regional and state competitions, garnering several awards. Such honors include first place finishes at JamFest - Collegiate Open Cheer and the Ohio Cheerleading and Dance Team Championships. In addition, Owens' squad was second at the Cheerleaders of America Open Championship.
