Owens Community College Express Basketball Holds Open Tryouts
Prospective high school graduates and area residents interested in playing intercollegiate basketball are invited to participate in Summer Open Tryouts at Owens Community College.
The Open Tryouts will be held in the College's Student Health and Activities Center on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from Downtown Toledo.
Men's basketball Open Tryouts will occur on Mondays and Wednesdays, May 24 - July 28, from 5-7 p.m. Open Tryouts will not be held on Monday, May 31. The Express women's basketball program will hold Open Tryouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 25 - June 17, from 6-7:30 p.m. An additional Open Tryout will occur on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Led by Head Coach Jim Welling, the men's basketball program finished with a 23-8 overall record and a 7-7 mark (fourth place) in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Owens advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XII (District 7) Men's Basketball Championships before losing to Columbus State Community College. Welling's squad was ranked as high as No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II men's basketball poll.
The women's basketball program, led by Interim Head Coach Matt Godfrey, completed their season with a 24-11 overall record and a 9-5 mark (fourth place) in the OCCAC regular season standings. Owens made its fourth trip to the NJCAA Division II National Championships, finishing ninth in the tournament. The team was ranked as high as No. 7 in the NJCAA Division II women's basketball poll.
