Owens Alumni Association Names Seven New Board of Directors

Owens Community College has named seven of the College’s alumni to serve as Board of Directors for the Alumni Association. The new Board of Directors were appointed to their positions during a recent organizational meeting and will serve three-year terms.

The new board members are Mark Carr of Perrysburg, Steven Cotner of Perrysburg, Allen Gunn of Perrysburg, Kaye Koevenig of Toledo, David Seeger of Maumee, William Steele of Toledo and Frank Weaver of Toledo.

“The Owens Community College Alumni Association has assembled an outstanding group of leaders who value the importance of a quality college education and the many benefits of lifelong learning,” said Janet Meacham, Owens President of the Alumni Association. “Owens’ alumni are the heart of our Association’s identity. The Alumni Association is a wonderful opportunity for fellow alums to renew old friendships, as well as build upon Owens’ educational tradition by making a difference in the lives current and future students.”

Meacham added, “As a new academic year soon begins, the Alumni Association looks to provide even more value-added programs and services with the goal of supporting the Owens mission and strengthening the surrounding communities.”

The Alumni Association and its 14-member Board of Directors are dedicated to engaging alumni and students in programs, events and services that energize interest, build loyalty and heighten support of the College.

Since opening its doors in 1965, Owens Community College has provided higher education to more than 250,000 students. Owens’ Alumni Association is committed to the personal and professional success of alumni and students through the ongoing development of value-added initiatives.

The College’s Alumni Association is open to all graduates or students who have successfully completed any credit or non-credit course at Owens. New members have the opportunity to serve on the organization’s Board of Directors or committees, utilize the Student Health and Activities Center, Common Computer labs, and Library services and attend a variety of social and networking events.

Throughout the academic year, Owens’ Alumni Association has engaged in a variety of events, activities and endeavors, benefiting both the College and the Northwest Ohio community. Among the Association’s initiatives were establishing a new Owens Alumni Legacy Endowed Scholarship Program and hosting its first- ever Toledo Mud Hens night and whitewater rafting trip in West Virginia. The organization also recently honored area police, fire and emergency medical professionals with an Inaugural Outstanding Service Award celebration. The awards recognized exemplary levels of public service within the surrounding Northwest Ohio communities.

In May, the Association sponsored its Second Annual Golf Classic. The 27-team event raised a record-setting $44,500 to benefit scholarship endeavors. As part of a collaborative effort with the College’s Student Government, the Alumni Association is currently accepting gently used backpacks or new school supplies, which will be given to low-income elementary school children prior to the new school year. The community service activity is titled “Backpack to the Future.”

The Alumni Association Board of Directors also includes Janet Meacham of Rossford (President), Michael Rickard of Toledo (Vice President), Debbie Green of Graytown (Secretary), Susan Litten of Maumee (Treasurer), Gary Dettling of Perrysburg (Ex-Officio), Angela Jackson of Toledo and Laura Moore (Manager of Alumni Affairs) of Perrysburg.
