New Medical Reimbursement Specialist Certificate Offered at Owens Community College

Responding to the growing need of health-related office professionals, Owens Community College is expanding its Health Technologies Division to offer the Northwest Ohio community a new Medical Reimbursement Specialist Certificate Program.

"Medical reimbursement specialists play a vital role for doctors, patients and nurses in a variety of health care settings," said Bonnie Hemp, Owens Chair of Health Information Technologies. "The College looks forward to providing students the necessary training and skills so that they may help to alleviate the growing need for trained professionals in the medical billing field."

Created as an entry-level program, the Medical Reimbursement Specialist Certificate is designed to teach students about the areas of medical terminology, computer applications, coding methodologies for diagnosis and procedures, reimbursement standards, and medical insurance billing. Individuals in this profession can be found applying their medical billing skills at acute care agencies, physician offices, hospitals and long-term care agencies.

The new certificate program requires approximately 29 credit hours of course work, which includes learning how to abstract patient information, differentiate between various procedures and service codes, and interpret rules and regulations regarding billing practices. A number of required courses may be completed through the College's e-Learning curriculum.

Many of the courses in the Medical Reimbursement Specialist Certificate Program can be applied toward an associate degree in the Health Information Technologies. Graduates of the certificate program may receive professional recognition through the American Association of Medical Billers.
