New Administrative Virtual Assistant Certificate Offered at Owens Community College

Owens Community College is responding to the demand for qualified office support professionals by becoming one of the first academic institutions nationwide to offer a credit certificate in Virtual Assisting. The new Administrative Virtual Assistant Certificate Program will be offered through the College's Business, Public Service and Information Technologies on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses.

"Owens' Business, Public Service and Information Technologies is proud to serve as a leader in providing new academic opportunities for the surrounding communities," said D'Naie Jacobs, Owens Chair of Information Systems/Office Administration. "An administrative virtual assistant is an experienced individual who provides necessary office skills and expertise in a variety of business settings. This new program is designed to teach students how to support and operate a small business successfully."

Jacobs added, "Administrative virtual assistants enjoy the opportunity of a 'mobile' office. They have the opportunity to live in multiple locations across the country and work in a wide range of office settings."

The Administrative Virtual Assistant Certificate Program instructs students about the areas of web and graphic design, event and meeting planning, Internet research, editing and writing, and word processing. Individuals in this profession can be found applying their virtual assistant skills at consulting firms, small businesses, or with special project coordinators for larger companies.

The one-year certificate program requires approximately 26 credit hours of course work, which includes learning about business law, small business management, e- business and integrated office communications. In addition, students will participate in Owens' Virtual Assistant Coaching Seminars, guided by successful virtual assistants and marketing leaders within the business community.

Many of the courses in the Administrative Virtual Assistant Certificate Program can be applied toward an associate degree in Office Administration Technology, Office Coordinator Option or Business Management Technology.
