National and Local Community Performers Scheduled This Fall At Owens' Center for Fine and Performing Arts

Owens Community College's Center for Fine and Performing Arts will raise the curtain on another season with an array of events scheduled throughout the 2004 Fall Arts Season. Music, dance and theatre artists from the Midwest and around the world will perform in a variety of events, which also will be highlighted by local community productions.

Hailed by the "New York Times" as the preeminent male singer/songwriter of the new folk movement, John Gorka will delight the Center for Fine and Performing Arts audience with a stunning baritone voice, fresh lyrics and artistic integrity on October 23. For more than 20 years, Gorka has created folk-inspired acoustic music full of depth, beauty and emotion, dazzling critics and audiences around the world. His continuing commitment to the craft of folk tradition has allowed him to produce eight albums with hits such as "When She Kisses Me."

The diverse season also includes one of the finest Scottish fiddlers of our time, Bonnie Rideout's Scottish Trio. From the stages of Scotland's Edinburgh International Festival to America's Kennedy Center, Rideout's Scottish Trio presents an unforgettable performance of dance tunes, bagpipe marches and ancient Gaelic melodies on November 6. A three-time U.S.-Scottish fiddle champion, her evocative music of the Highlands has landed her appearances on CBS' "Sunday Morning" and National Public Radio's "Performance Today."

"Owens Community College is honored to welcome such a variety of diverse artistic performances to begin another great season within the Center for Fine and Performing Arts," said Dr. Bruce Way, Owens Dean of Arts and Sciences. "Not only will the Center offer a rich educational component for Owens students, but it also will once again serve as a venue for both the College and the community to come together through the arts."

Community arts events also will highlight the 2004 Fall Arts Season as Owens collaborates with the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra to offer the Judy Beck Side-by-Side Memorial Concert on September 26. The Toledo Public Schools Arts Education Project Showcase Night will take center stage on October 6.

The musical favorite, "Annie" will be presented by the Toledo School for the Arts from November 11-14. Additionally, the "Nutcracker" will ring in this holiday season on two occasions. On December 4, the Elena Bartley Dance Academy will present a classic performance of the "Nutcracker," while the Toledo Jazz Society will introduce "Harlem Nutcracker" on December 15.

All performing arts events will occur in Owens' Mainstage Theatre on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from downtown Toledo.
