Owens Community College Lends Helping Hand To U.S. Soldiers With Supply Drive, Sept. 13 - Oct. 15

Owens Community College is reaching out to the brave men and women fighting overseas by taking the initiative of holding its first-ever "Donations For Soldiers" Supply Drive on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses this fall.

Beginning on September 13, the "Donations For Soldiers" Supply Drive will accept a variety of toiletry, stationary and food items. Such supplies include toothbrushes, sun block, band- aids, soap, pens, paper, envelopes, packaged candy, tea bags, gum and mints. Monetary donations also will be accepted to help cover the cost of shipping. The donation drive will run through October 15.

"Owens Community College is honored to support the U.S. soldiers through the 'Donations For Soldiers' Supply Drive," said Bill Bowser, Owens Computer Technician and organizer of the 'Donations For Soldiers' Supply Drive. "Through the collaboration of the College and the community, the 'Donations for Soldiers' Supply Drive is one way to extend our appreciation to America's troops."

Bowser added, "The donations accepted over the next month will generously assist over 100 soldiers in the Ohio National Guard's 216th Engineer Battalion from Walbridge."

The 216th Engineer Battalion was mobilized to support Operation Iraqi Freedom efforts in the U.S. Central Command area of operations. The area includes culturally diverse nations located throughout the Horn of Africa, South and Central Asia and the Northern Red Seas regions, as well as the Arabian Peninsula and Iraq.

As part of its mission, the 216th Engineer Battalion is providing command and control of engineer assets in the area of operations for firefighting, dump truck and bridge building units. The 216th Engineer Battalion unit departed for its overseas mission in early January 2004.

Additionally, soldiers have requested miscellaneous items like footballs, soccer balls, crossword puzzles, a deck of cards, disposable cameras, used DVDs or CDs, batteries and phone cards. Individuals are prohibited from donating home baked goods, pork products, glass jars and sealed envelopes.

Owens has set up a variety of collection points around the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses. Area residents can drop off their charitable donations on the Toledo-area Campus at the Bursar's Office, the Student Health and Activities Center, Alumni Hall, the Industrial and Engineering Technologies Building, the Fire Science and Law Enforcement Center, the Transportation Technologies Center and the College's Bookstore. On the Findlay-area Campus, collection points are at the Facility Services Building and within the College's Atrium.
