Owens Child Care Center Displays Works of Art During First-Ever Children's Art Show

Children attending Owens' Child Care Center show off their artistic masterpieces during the art show. Children attending Owens Community College's Child Care Center recently displayed their artistic qualities, creative impressions and imaginative masterpieces to the community by holding the first-ever Children's Art Show. More than 100 pieces of children's work were on display in Owens' Audio/Visual Classroom Center on the Toledo-area Campus.

Young artists ages 6 weeks to 12 years old showcased a variety of works, including mosaics, collages, clay sculptures and watercolor pieces. The art show represented a culmination of a three-month summer art program at the College's Child Care Center.

"The Owens Child Care Center Children's Art Show was an exciting and rewarding time to display the hard work and talents of our children," said Maribeth Tercha, Owens Manager of the Child Care Center. "Creating an artistic environment where children can express their interests and emotions is an excellent method to broaden a child's insight and heighten cognitive development."

The Children's Art Show was inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. The Owens Child Care instructors utilized the Reggio Emilia philosophy in their art curriculum, inviting the children's interests to guide artistic creations. Books and other literature read during the art program influenced many of the masterpieces.

The mission of the Owens Community College Child Care Center is to provide quality child care for the children of employees, students and the surrounding communities. The program is devoted to enhancing the lives of children through developmentally appropriate curriculum, which is child centered.

Children enrolled in the Owens Child Care Center have the opportunity to interact with the College's Early Childhood Education Technology students, which provides opportunities for more individual attention. Owens students benefit through practical hands-on lab experiences that deepens their understanding and learning about young children.

Owens Community College is the fastest-growing higher educational institution in Ohio with 29 consecutive semesters of enrollment increases.
