Owens Community College Hosts Care Fair for Health, Wednesday, October 6

More than 500 high school juniors and seniors will learn about ways to make their lives more enjoyable through healthy living as Owens Community College hosts Care Fair for Health 2004 on Wednesday, October 6.

The Care Fair is sponsored by the Owens Health Technologies Division’s faculty and students and will occur from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the College’s Student Health and Activities Center on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from Downtown Toledo.

“Owens Community College is excited to once again host an event dedicated to educating students about our nation’s growing health concerns,” said Lee Grinonneau, Owens Care Fair for Health Committee Chairman. “Care Fair for Health is a great opportunity for high school students to be exposed to a variety of careers within health care.”

Grinonneau added, “Throughout the day, students also will be able to take advantage of the health services and advice being offered by Northwest Ohio’s premiere health care community.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to pickup vital information from more than 60 health displays on many topics, including cancer detection and prevention, CPR, organ and tissue donation and health appraisals. High school students also will explore health care careers in dental hygiene, nursing, medical imaging, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant and surgical technology, among others.

Organizations on hand from the health care community will include the Flower Hospital Cancer Center, St. Luke’s Hospital, Mobile Meals of Toledo and the Northwest Ohio Regional Genetics Center. In addition, The St. Vincent/Mercy Medical Center will be providing blood sugar screenings and diabetes education information. Individuals also can view Promedica Health System’s helicopter air unit, which will be on display in the Student Health and Activities Center parking lot during the event.

The Owens Student Nurse Association will be holding a healthy bake sale. Owens nursing students also will offer information on the Heimlich maneuver and CPR through a “Choking Charlie” demonstration.

Local high schools attending the event will include Clay High School, Erie High School, Lakota High School, Liberty Center High School, Libbey High School, Patrick Henry High School, Sentinel Career Center, Sylvania Northview High School, Toledo Christian High School, Whitmer High School, Willard High School and Woodward High School.
