Owens Community College Names New Director of Middle College

Edward Willis Owens Community College has chosen Edward Willis as the new Director of Middle College. His responsibilities will include overseeing all aspects of administration for Owens' new Middle College.

In addition, his new position will entail assisting in the creation of the Middle College, which is designed to integrate student and academic services related to tutoring, advising, career exploration, testing and other support initiatives. The overall focus of the new Middle College is to assist students who may be experiencing academic difficulty with the ultimate goal of retaining them until they achieve their academic aspirations.

"Owens Community College is looking forward to Mr. Willis' leadership with the Middle College and its contribution to the preparation and retention of our students," said Dr. Paul Unger, Provost of Owens Community College.

Since August 2002, Willis has served as the Dean of Students for The University of Michigan. While at Michigan, he was responsible for out of classroom services and support for students. Under his leadership, the Dean of Students staff worked with individual students and student groups, faculty, and staff to resolve conflict, eliminate barriers, and influence systematic change for many issues that could impede the realization of the students' educational goals.

In addition, Willis was a senior lead member in the university's Division of Student Affairs and advised the Vice President of Student Affairs on divisional programs and services.

Prior to The University of Michigan, Willis spent nine years at The University of Toledo. From 1998-2002, he had the responsibility of directing and developing programs dedicated to enhancing the quality of student life on campus, serving as Dean of Students.

"It is a tremendous honor to join the Owens Community College team and serve as Director of the Middle College," Willis said. "I am deeply committed to promoting the importance of higher education and look forward to assisting Owens students reach new heights in their academic endeavors."

Willis' professional involvement includes membership with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Ohio Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Association of College Unions. Active in the community, he held board-level positions with the Lake Erie Shores Boy Scout Council, the National Youth Sports Program and the Catholic Club of Toledo.

A resident of Toledo, Willis earned his master's degree in social and philosophical foundations of education from Rutgers University and a bachelor's degree in American history from Montclair State University.
