Owens Community College Student Receives Northwest Ohio Restaurant Association Scholarship

Christopher Snyder An Owens Community College student has been chosen by the Northwest Ohio Restaurant Association (NWORA) to receive a $2,000 scholarship for excellence within the classroom and workplace. The College's award recipient is Christopher Snyder of Toledo.

The NWORA was founded in 1936 as a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the restaurant industry in the Toledo area. Organizational initiatives include working with charitable community groups and providing scholarships to area students seeking careers in the food service industry.

"Owens Community College appreciates Northwest Ohio Restaurant Association's commitment to Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Technologies," said Tekla Madaras, Owens Chair of Dietetics/HRI Technologies. "Such scholarships will further assist our students in their pursuit of hospitality management and food service careers."

Scholarship criterion includes applicants being interviewed by a panel of NWORA representatives to determine award recipients. Interview questions focus on an individual's career aspirations, community involvement, goals and accomplishments. In addition, scholarship applicants must be enrolled within a higher educational institution and working toward a degree in hospitality management or culinary arts.

Snyder is a hospitality management major at Owens and carries a 3.6 grade point average. A graduate of Perrysburg High School, his accomplishments include receiving a scholarship from the Maumee Valley Chefs Association in recognition of his work in food services. In addition, he recently participated in a youth group mission trip to South Dakota as part of the First United Methodist Church in Perrysburg. Currently serving as a waiter and bartender at Gianno's Italian Bistro, Snyder plans on attending Bowling Green State University to obtain a bachelor's degree in either business or management.

Owens' Hotel, Restaurant, Institution (HRI) Technologies offers students the opportunity to pursue either an associate's degree or a certificate while preparing for careers within the hospitality management or food service industries.
