Owens Community College Hosts Women's Heart Advantage, Feb. 26

Area women interested in learning about making their lives healthier are invited to attend a Women's Heart Advantage program at Owens Community College on Saturday, February 26.

The Women's Heart Advantage event will occur from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the College's Audio/Visual Classroom Center on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from downtown Toledo. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend. However, pre-registration is required.

"Women's Heart Advantage is a great opportunity for women of all ages to benefit from health services and advice being offered by Northwest Ohio's premiere health care community," said Janell Lang, Owens Dean for the School of Health Sciences. "Heart disease is our nation's number one killer for women. An event such as Women's Heart Advantage is just one of the many ways to combat the disease by raising awareness through cardiovascular education."

Owens faculty and students and health care professionals will offer a wide variety of educational programs throughout the day, highlighting women's heart health and risk concerns. Breakout session topics will include depression, nutrition and stress, and their relationships to heart disease.

Respected cardiologist Daniel Cassavar, M.D., from ProMedica Health System will address Women's Heart Advantage attendees from 10:10-10:45 a.m. The focus of his keynote address will offer insight into women's heart disease symptoms and risk factors.

In addition, free health screenings including cholesterol, blood pressure, body-mass index and pulse irregularities will be available to all participants, as well as literature related to heart disease. Individuals also can attend a free Friends and Family Participation CPR class during the first and second breakout sessions, for which advanced registration is required.

The Women's Heart Advantage event is a collaboration among Owens Community College, ProMedica Health System, and the American Heart Association of Greater Toledo.

For more information about the Women's Heart Advantage event, or to register, call (419) 291-5899.
