Owens Community College Names New Center for Fine and Performing Arts Operations Manager

Barbara Barkan Owens Community College has chosen Barbara Barkan as the new Operations Manager for the Center for Fine and Performing Arts. Her responsibilities will include overseeing all aspects of the Center for Fine and Performing Arts’ business, marketing and administrative operations. In addition, her new position will entail assisting in the budgeting, event scheduling and coordination of the various initiatives occurring within the Center. Barkan will also supervise the Center for Fine and Performing Arts’ students, volunteers and staff assigned to the box office and house management for event-specific activities.

“We are very honored to welcome Barbara Barkan to Owens Community College,” said Eric Wallack, Owens Chair of Fine and Performing Arts. “Barbara brings a wealth of expertise and experience within the fine and performing arts profession to the College, which is invaluable. Her background and knowledge will allow the Center for Fine and Performing Arts to build upon its rich tradition of offering culturally diverse events and activities for the Northwest Ohio community through the arts.”

Prior to her new position at Owens, Barkan served as the Executive Director of Performing Arts for The Franciscan Center at Lourdes College for five years. While at Lourdes, she was responsible for all activities pertaining to the operation of the facility and its season performances. Through her leadership, The Franciscan Center served as the venue to an array of events highlighting music, dance and theatre artists from the Midwest and around the world. Among the culturally diverse artists to appear at The Franciscan Center were Robert Mirabal and the Rare Tribal Mob, the Irish Rovers and the Capital Steps.

In addition, she previously held the positions of Box Office Manager and the Assistant Director of Marketing and Public Relations during her tenure at The Franciscan Center.

Her professional and community involvement includes serving on Mayor Jack Ford’s Cultural Arts Task Force and holding board-level membership with the Toledo Repertoire Theatre and the Toledo School for the Arts. Additionally, Barkan is a member of the Ohio Arts Presenters Network, the Arts Presenters of America, the Ohio Arts Council and the Arts Council of Greater Toledo Steering Committee.

A resident of Toledo, Barkan earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lourdes College and an associate degree in theatre and speech from the State University of New York at Fredonia.
