Owens Community College to Host Union Management Relations Seminar, Apr. 12

Area business professionals interested in acquiring additional information about union management history and cooperation in Northwest Ohio are invited to attend a Union Management Relations Seminar hosted by Owens Community College on Tuesday, April 12. Serving as the keynote speakers are longtime union relations leaders Oscar Bunch and Joe Farinella.

Presented by the College's School of Business and Information Technology, the seminar, titled "Union Management Relations Between UAW Local 14 and General Motors Powertrain Toledo: Past, Present and Future," will occur from 6-8 p.m. in the Audio/Visual Classroom Center Rooms 125-128. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from downtown Toledo. Admission to the event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

"Owens Community College is honored to have such well-respected and distinguished individuals as Oscar Bunch and Joe Farinella address the Northwest Ohio community and provide an insightful look into the importance of union management relations," said Chuck Bohleke, Owens Chair of Business Technologies.

Bunch has served as President of UAW Local 14 for the past 27 years. He recently began an unprecedented 10th consecutive three-year term as President of the professional organization. Bunch began his career as a pipe fitter for General Motors in 1956 and has been an employee with the company for 49 years. The union management relations advocate has served as a longtime guest lecturer at various colleges and universities throughout Northwest Ohio.

Farinella is the Plant Personnel Director for General Motors Powertrain Toledo Transmission Plant. He joined General Motors in 1976 as an Associate Statistician at the Cadillac Motor Car Division in Detroit. Since 1976, Farinella has served in various positions with the company, including General Supervisor of Labor Relations, Industrial Relations Manager and Senior Administrator to General Motors North American Operations Personnel at Warren, Mich. Additionally, he previously served as a co-Chair of the Northwest Ohio Working Council on Employee Involvement.

Topics to be discussed during the two-hour discussion will include history between UAW Local 14 and General Motors Powertrain Toledo and how collaborative efforts by both parties have made their partnership a model for union management relations.
