Owens' Workforce and Community Services Offers a Self-Defense Class, April 20

Area female residents are invited to learn about ways of reducing the risk of exposure to violence as Owens Community College, in collaboration with the Toledo Metroparks, offers a Self-Defense and Familiarization Exchange (S.A.F.E.) class on Wednesday, April 20.

The S.A.F.E. course will occur from 7-9 p.m. at the College's Workforce and Community Services, located on Tracy Road in Northwood.

"Owens' S.A.F.E. course is designed to expose residents to all aspects of self- defense, minimizing the risk of being involved in violent attacks," said Becky Woodcock, Owens Instructor of the S.A.F.E. class. "Attendees will acquire knowledge about the various options related to self-defense and how to properly use them within certain situations."

Woodcock added, "Self-defense is extremely important and I encourage all females to strongly consider taking such a course."

The two-hour program will highlight an array of strategies, options and prevention techniques for teenage and adult women, as well as provide public safety awareness information to incorporate into everyday life.

Individuals will be given the option of participating in self-defense demonstrations if interested. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing to the class.

Owens' Workforce and Community Services is dedicated to providing customer- driven workforce development and job training. The learning-centered approach focuses on developing and enhancing professional skills to meet the needs of the community, customizing training in the areas of computer applications, allied health education, apprenticeship-related training and skilled trades.

The registration fee for the class is only $25. For more information, or to register for the class, call (567) 661-7357 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7357.
