Owens Community College Adds Golf To Express Intercollegiate Athletic Programs

Owens Community College is expanding its intercollegiate athletic programs by announcing the creation of a new Golf Team. The Express Golf Program will officially begin NJCAA competition during the 2006 spring season and serve as a club sport this fall.

The recommendation for the new Golf Program was officially approved during the regularly scheduled Owens Community College Board of Trustees meeting.

"Owens intercollegiate athletics and our student-athletes exemplify excellence both within the classroom and on the playing field," said Dr. Bill Ivoska, Owens Vice President of Student Services. "The Golf Program is a welcome addition to student enrichment and athletics and will afford new opportunities for the College's student- athletes to experience the benefits of teamwork, leadership, responsibility and achievement."

The College's Golf Program will become a Division II member of the NJCAA and participate in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Owens will primarily compete against other community colleges from Ohio and Michigan. Academic institutions from the OCCAC competing in intercollegiate golf include Lakeland Community College, Columbus State Community College, Sinclair Community College, Terra Community College and Cincinnati State Community College.

According to Jim Welling, Owens Director of Student Enrichment and Athletics, eight golf scholarships are available to both males and females and the Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg has graciously offered to serve as the College's home course.

"We appreciate Belmont Country Club's support of Owens' intercollegiate athletics and look forward to the opportunity of our student-athletes competing on one of Ohio's elite golf courses," said Welling. "Arguably, Belmont Country Club will become the pinnacle of golf venues within the conference and enable Owens to contend for a national title very quickly. We want to build this program into one of the best in the country."

Welling will serve as the Head Coach, while Bill Perry, Belmont Country Club Course Professional, will handle assistant coaching responsibilities. The Express Golf Program will become the seventh intercollegiate athletic program offered at Owens. The six other sports include men's baseball, women's softball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's soccer and women's volleyball.

Owens has been a member of the OCCAC for the past 18 years. The nine other member schools comprising the OCCAC are Clark State Community College, Cincinnati State Community College, Columbus State Community College, Cuyahoga Community College, Edison State Community College, Lakeland Community College, Sinclair Community College, Southern State Community College and Terra Community College.
