Owens Community College Professor Receives Distinguished Teaching Excellence Award

Tom Deckelman Owens Community College Professor of Business Technologies Tom Deckelman has been chosen by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Region 4 to receive the distinguished Teaching Excellence Award for associate degree institutions. The award recognizes exemplary contributions and dedication to the teaching profession.

The ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award honors business faculty in higher education who are outstanding teachers as recognized by students, peers, administrators, alumni and business representatives. Deckelman, honored as the North Central Region recipient, was one of only eight individuals nationwide to receive the award. States within the North Central Region include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

"Tom is an exceptional classroom teacher," said Chuck Bohleke, Owens Chair of Business Technologies. "He gives of himself tirelessly and wants to make a difference in students' lives. Educators like Tom are the ones that students remember for many years because of their impact. He is very deserving of this recognition."

Selection criteria for the ACBSP Teaching Excellence Award is based upon an instructor's teaching methods within the classroom, curriculum development, professional development, institutional versatility and commitment to the community. As a result of his regional honor, Deckelman becomes one of eight finalists for the International Teaching Excellence Award, which will be announced this coming June in Washington DC.

Founded in 1988, ACBSP is the premier accreditation of business programs at the associate degree through graduate levels. The organization's membership consists primarily of small to medium size colleges, universities and community colleges throughout the United States. Consisting of 369 membership institutions, ACBSP is the leading specialized accreditation association for business education, which supports, celebrates and rewards teaching excellence. ACBSP encourages faculty involvement within the contemporary business world to enhance the quality of classroom instruction and to contribute to student learning.

Deckelman has been a member of Owens' faculty since 1985. In his current position as Professor, he educates students in the areas of market research, consumer behavior, marketing planning and strategy, marketing of service businesses, and business management, among others. Deckelman also was instrumental in developing and designing Owens courses such as marketing planning and strategy and marketing of service businesses.

His professional and community involvement includes membership in the American Marketing Association and volunteering as a baseball and basketball coach for St. Joseph School in Sylvania.

The Sylvania resident earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in marketing from the University of Toledo.
