Owens Express Signs First Golfer To Scholarship in School History

The Owens Community College Express Golf Program recently signed standout golfer Blake Tucker of Findlay to a national letter of intent to compete in intercollegiate athletics for the 2005-06 academic year. The Van Buren High School graduate is the first student-athlete to be awarded a golf scholarship in school history.

According to Jim Welling, Owens director of student enrichment and athletics and Express golf head coach, Tucker is expected to anchor the team, which should be highly competitive at the NJCAA Division II level despite being a new program.

Tucker, with a current USGA handicap of +1.0, recently set the course record at Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay after shooting a 68 and advanced out of the Ohio Amateur Qualifier with a round of 73. After placing third in the Ohio Amateur, Tucker is expected to compete in the championship tournament later this summer. His accomplishments also include All-Ohio, All-District and All-Blanchard Valley Conference recognition, and a runner-up finish in the Division II Ohio High School State Championships this past fall.

The new Express Golf Program will officially begin NJCAA competition during the 2006 spring season and serve as a club sport this fall. Owens will become a Division II member of the NJCAA and participate in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). Owens will primarily compete against other community colleges from Ohio and Michigan.

Individuals still interested in trying out for the Owens golf team should contact the Department of Student Enrichment and Athletics and reserve a position to tryout prior to Friday, July 15.

Tryouts will be held at Maumee Bay State Park on Monday, July 18 and begin at 7:30 a.m. The green fee is $11. Participants in the top 12 will advance to second round competition occurring at Belmont Country Club on Tuesday, July 19. Competition will begin at 2 p.m.

Golf scholarships are available to both males and females and the Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg will serve as the College's home course. For more information, call (567) 661-7973 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7973.
