Owens Findlay-area Campus Says Goodbye to Davis Street Location With Facility Move, July 28-31

FINDLAY - Nail holes and a framed picture depicting a collage of doors are all that's left on Darla Johannsen's walls in her current Owens Community College Findlay-area Campus faculty office. Gone are the bookcases and many of her prized possessions, which have adorned the professor of information technologies' home-away-from-home since 1991. The destination for these and all of Johannsen's boxed items will soon be the new Findlay-area Campus, located on Bright Road, as the fast approaching "campus move" has finally arrived.

Owens professor of information technologies, Darla Johannsen takes a break from boxing up her office on the current Findlay-area Campus. Beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, the Findlay-area Campus on the corner of Cory and Davis streets will become part of the College's historical past as workers from Owens' Building and Grounds and professional movers box up and remove nearly everything from the current facility except the sinks. With this move, Owens will become the only college or university in Ohio to officially open a completely new campus beginning with academic classes this fall.

Educating thousands of students since its founding in 1983, the current facility will close the double glass doors for the last time as an educational institution on Saturday, July 30. Items expected to depart from the existing campus via crates and cardboard boxes will include desks, phones, televisions, computers, hospital beds, carts and books, among other equipment.

According to Tom Metz, Owens journeyman maintenance and Findlay-area Campus supervisor, the enormity of moving an entire campus in a matter of days seems at times like a daunting task. However, beaming with an almost proud smile and a stern determination on his face, Metz believes the Owens Findlay-area Campus employees are up to the moving challenge.

"Owens employees are the reason that the Findlay-area Campus relocation has been such an easy process," said Metz. "Our faculty and staff have done a great job in boxing up their offices and personal belongings. Without their cooperation, we could not pull off this unheard of institutional move."

Hundreds of boxes lay empty within the Findlay-area Campus' Bookstore, located at the Davis Street facility. The move itself will occur Thursday-Sunday, July 28-31, with the bulk of the larger equipment, such as furniture, copiers, computer tables and copy paper, expected to take place the first two days. Items within the student service areas, including the Bursar's Office, Records Office, Financial Aid Office and Enrollment Services Office, will occur on Saturday and Sunday.

The College's current Findlay-area Campus on the corner of Cory and Davis streets will be open for business throughout the move. Owens' new $17.7 million state-of-the-art facility, located on Bright Road, is expected to be open for students and the community beginning on Monday, August 1.

For Johannsen, the necessities of a computer, desk, phone, and a few pens and pencils are all that remain until Thursday's move, which will eventually lead to an empty office. "A person accumulates a lot of stuff over time," stated the longtime educator while surveying her office. "I hope I boxed everything up properly!"

Johannsen added, "I really have fond memories of this building and the people I met through the years," she said. "However, I'm really excited about the move to the new Findlay-area Campus and can't wait to make some more memories."
