Owens Enhances Campus Life Through New Fireside Grill

Owens' new Fireside Grill opened its doors for the first time with the beginning of Fall Semester classes. For many Owens Community College students and employees, lunchtime is a sacred occasion often devoted to refueling and giving tired bodies some much-needed rest. Starting with this fall semester, students and employees will be able to spend their “off-time” in a new state-of-the-art dining facility. Named the Fireside Grill, the dining hall features an array amenities and educational services designed to serve a vital and growing campus.

The newly renovated $737,848 Fireside Grill replaces Fountain View Dining Hall in College Hall, which served as the College’s main dining hall and conference center for the past 21 years.

“Owens Community College is so excited to offer our students and employees new options through the Fireside Grill,” said Dr. Bill Ivoska, Owens vice president of Student Services. “This amazing facility enables us to expand upon our services as we continue to meet the needs of our students. We anticipate the Fireside Grill becoming the center of campus life and a place individuals really want to visit and spend time in.”

According to Chuck Mann, Owens senior vice president of Business Affairs, the Fountain View Dining Hall looked every bit as it did back when it was first built. “We felt it was necessary to upgrade a cafeteria that was simply beyond its time,” he stated.

Students are able to access e-mail and information online via more than 20 state-of-the-art computers located within the facility. Mann added, “The new Fireside Grill is not the cafeteria-style format as of years past, but instead has a more modern feel, allowing students and employees the opportunity to choose from a variety of different food options.”

In fact, customers will now be able to choose from a number of popular food and beverage options, including Subway, Beaner’s Coffee, Marco’s Pizza and Toft’s Ice Cream, as well as traditional food court offerings such as a soup and salad bar, the Angus Grill, Snack and Go and Café International, which features different international cuisines each day.

Students and employees will also be able to eat, study and relax in a variety of places, including the Express Café, the Sports Café or the Cyber Café. The Sports Café will offer dining entertainment highlighted by four mounted wide screen televisions, while the Cyber Café will afford students the opportunity of accessing e-mail and information online via more than 20 state-of-the-art computers located within the facility.

Serving as the focal point to the new Fireside Grill is an expansive stone fireplace designed to stimulate learning within a quiet and relaxing environment. “I love the new Fireside Grill,” said Owens student Heather Baker of Sylvania. “It’s really inviting and modern. You don’t feel like you’re in a cafeteria.”

A radiography major, Baker already envisions spending an ample amount of time studying in one of the many comfortable, plush chairs or booths. “This place has a great atmosphere to relax in between classes and to study.”

The new Fireside Grill will provide food service Monday-Thursday (7 a.m. - 8 p.m.), Friday (7 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and Saturday (7:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.).
