The Elephant’s Child in Performance
At Owens Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Sept. 25

The Elephant’s Child Pulsating percussive rhythms and dazzling sets and costumes will engulf Owens Community College’s Center for Fine and Performing Arts as The Elephant’s Child, a musical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale of how an elephant got his trunk, is performed on Sunday, September 25. The show, which is the first in a series of three, Family Fun Sunday performances, will appear on the College’s Mainstage Theatre at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“Owens’ Center for Fine and Performing Arts is proud to provide an exciting and family-oriented afternoon with a nationally renowned group performance of The Elephant’s Child,” said Barbara Barkan, Owens operations manager for the Center for Fine and Performing Arts. “The exotic sounds and spectacular visuals of this musical extravaganza will make for an unforgettable family event, complete with hands on activities that bring the magic of the show to life.”

Incorporating rhythmic African percussion, marvelous choreography, and extraordinary costumes and vocal talent, The Elephant’s Child will delight families with its wit and imagination. In addition to the performances, each child in attendance will receive a special Elephant’s Child fun pack and may participate in a variety of games and activities coordinated by the Toledo Zoo. Also, the Toledo School for the Arts will conduct pre-show workshops on West African dance and drumming at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. prior to each performance.

Kipling’s classic children’s story was originally adapted as part of the Vivian Ellis Prize-winning musical Just So as far back as 1985. The Elephant’s Child has since been given new life by the Class Acts on Tour production company, which the Smithsonian has recognized as “one of the best children’s theatre companies on the market today” and praised for its commitment to quality.

The original score by Bob Novak and David Griffiths has proven to be wildly popular with audiences and led to the release of a book and accompanying CD in the fall of 2002. The group has performed around the country, including dates in the nation’s capital this past summer.

Additional events forthcoming at Owens’ Center for Fine and Performing Arts as part of the Family Fun Sunday series, which is designed to provide fun and entertainment to individuals of all ages, include The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales on January 22 and Pippi Longstocking on May 21.

Tickets for The Elephant’s Child are $10 and all seats are general admission. To purchase tickets visit www.stagetix.com or contact the College’s Box Office. For more information about the event, contact the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at (567) 661-2787 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. ARTS (2787).
