Owens Community College Hosts Care Fair for Health, Wednesday, Sept. 28

Area residents and high school students are invited to learn about ways to make their lives more enjoyable through healthy living as Owens Community College hosts Care Fair for Health 2005 on Wednesday, September 28.

The Care Fair is sponsored by the Owens School of Health Sciences' faculty and students and will occur from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the College's Student Health and Activities Center on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from downtown Toledo.

"Owens Community College is excited to once again host an event dedicated to educating area residents and students about our nation's growing health concerns," said Jennifer Irelan, Owens assistant director of Enrollment Services and Care Fair for Health committee co-chair. "Throughout the day, individuals will be able to take advantage of the health services and advice being offered by Northwest Ohio's premiere health care community."

Attendees will have the opportunity to pickup vital information from more than 60 health displays on many topics, including cancer detection and prevention, CPR, fire safety, mobile meals, nutrition, sleeping disorders, therapeutic horseback riding, sports care and health appraisals. Individuals also can explore health care careers in dental hygiene, nursing, medical imaging, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant and surgical technology, among others.

Organizations on hand from the health care community will include the Flower Hospital Cancer Center, St. Luke's Hospital, Mobile Meals of Toledo, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Burn Care Center, ProMedica Health System Sports Rehabilitation, Maumee Urgent Medical Care Center, Alexis Industrial Medical Center and the Northwest Ohio Regional Genetics Center. Individuals also can view a medical helicopter air unit, which will be on display in the Student Health and Activities Center parking lot during the event.

Additionally, the Owens Student Nurse Association will be holding a healthy bake sale. Owens nursing students also will offer information on the Heimlich maneuver and CPR through a "Choking Charlie" demonstration.
