Surgical Technology is a profession that focuses on the care of the patient throughout their entire surgical experience. The education provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to function in surgery and other areas where aseptic technique is important. Certified surgical technologists are integral members of the surgical team, working with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and registered nurses in delivering direct patient care before, during and after surgery.
Surgical Technology educates students to prepare sterile supplies for surgical procedures, pass instruments and other sterile items and understand the role of the circulator. Surgical technologists maintain the sterile field and make sure all members of the team adhere to aseptic technique. During surgery, the surgical technologist is a member of the surgical team passing instruments, sutures, sponges and other items in an effective manner. Surgical Technologists anticipate the surgeon's needs to expedite the procedure using their knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Surgical Technologists also utilize a strong knowledge base of physics, electricity and robotics to expedite the use of sophisticated surgical equipment to facilitate the surgical procedure. Surgical technologists, intra -operatively can also assist the surgeon holding retractors, maintaining hemostasis, cutting suture, and applying dressings. Students also receive instruction in proper positioning of patients on the operating table, connecting and applying surgical equipment and monitoring devices, inserting catheters and preparing the incisional site pre-operatively to assist the circulator.
