Dr. Mike Bower is the sixth President and Chief Executive Officer of Owens Community College, and he began his appointment on July 1, 2012. Owens Community College is a fully accredited, comprehensive state community college in the University System of Ohio. The College offers career and transfer programs designed to develop students’ creative, critical thinking and hands-on skills. Owens Community College has instructional and technical facilities at its campuses in Perrysburg (Wood County), Findlay (Hancock County) and learning centers in Maumee and in downtown Toledo (Lucas County), Ohio.
Dr. Bower is a collaborative and community-minded leader. He is active in civic and community organizations, which align with the College’s mission of serving students and contributing to the communities’ needs for a vibrant workforce. As an executive officer of the Owens Community College Foundation—its mission, “We Invest in Success,” Dr. Bower is focused on increasing access and support for our students who come from all walks of life, as well as improving the quality of life in our communities.
Dr. Bower is an experienced educator and dedicated to advancing higher education. He serves as a consultant-evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission Peer Review Corps. His background in business, industry, and education merits him as a commissioner for the American Association of Community Colleges’ Commission on Economic and Workforce Development, a member for the American Association of Community Colleges’ Voluntary Framework of Accountability for Workforce and Economic Development (VFAWE), and president of the executive board for the Council of North Central Two-Year Colleges (CNCTYC). He has been awarded with a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International advancing the Rotary’s goals of world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.
Dr. Bower is an inclusive and engaging leader, who listens. He is committed to meeting students and stakeholders, and he is experienced in representing their needs, providing testimonials and strengthening local, state and federal partnerships. He is a member of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.
Previously, Dr. Bower served as the President of Lake Region State College, which is a student-centered, open access comprehensive community college within the North Dakota University System. He has served as an administrator at Mott Community College, Michigan; Chippewa Valley Technical College, Wisconsin; Central Community College, Nebraska; and as faculty and program chair at Ivy Tech State College, Indiana. Prior to his career in higher education, he was employed at Ford Motor Company and Thomson Consumer Electronics. He is a veteran and was honorably discharged from the United States Army.
Dr. Bower earned an Associate Degree of Applied Science in automotive technology from Vincennes University, Indiana, his Bachelor of Science in industrial technology from Indiana State University, his Master of Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, and his Doctorate of Philosophy Degree in Education, Administration, Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Leadership and Higher Education from the University of Nebraska.
