What has Owens CC/Veterans Services Office done for you?
Anytime I have needed assistance on registering for my benefits or needed anything certified, the Veterans Services Office has assisted me in a very quick fashion and made sure I was taken care of. They also put on some great events for our veterans and active personnel alike!

Are you using the GI Bill? Yes

If yes, to what degree does the GI Bill cover your school expenses?
The GI Bill is truly a lifesaver when it comes to attending school and making sure I am fully taken care of. This covers all of my tuition here at Owens and depending on your time in service and any deployments, can also cover any/all textbooks you will need with a little extra for everyday living expenses.

What prompted you to return to school?
Returning to school was also something I knew I would accomplish but wasn't exactly sure when I would complete. My time in the military will eventually complete and I am looking for a smooth transition once my service is completed. The relief of completing a degree with little to no student loan debt is such a relief compared to the normal student.

Was adjusting to college a challenge after military life? Why?
I am currently still in the military, but it is a little different environment then I was used to. On top of being a little older than some of the students, it was a little different atmosphere as well. Owens offers a great opportunity with its very diverse culture of all ages and parts of the world represented.

What has your experience been like at Owens Community College?
I myself have had a good experience over the 10-year span I have attended. I began in 2006 after graduation but put college on hold while performing my service in Swanton, Ohio at the 180th Fighter Wing. The (professors) are very professional and are very accommodating with any service related requirements that come my way.

What advice do you have for veterans returning to a college or university?
The best advice I could give would be register as soon as you can and stick it out as fast as you can. Breaks from school can cause your priority of school to go on hold while you are only working or doing other things in your life. The GI Bill is an absolutely amazing benefit we earn while completing our service and you should not let it go to waste.

How has your military experience made you a better student?
My experience in the military has made me a better person in general and student alike. My service has made me see all different walks of life and makes me appreciate the life a "normal U.S. citizen" has on a daily basis. Being a veteran has made me more responsible and has taught me how important integrity is.

What additional comments do you have about your military career, your Owens education or your Owens campus life?
I would recommend almost everyone to join some branch in the military and to experience the form of brotherhood that not many other professions can claim. During my two deployments, my unit was like an extremely large family/support system and has been the greatest decision/accomplishment I have made. Owens has always been a great decision to start my college career with many flexible classes as well as an affordable education to knock out your first two years if you are looking to further your education towards a bachelor's degree. I will receive my Associate of Applied Science degree this spring and am looking to further my education as well after my last semester here.

What has Owens CC/Veterans Services office done for you?
They helped me through the process of starting back at school. I did not know what bills to sign up to use for tuition. They helped me with that. They helped me with orientation and signing up for classes.

Are you using the GI Bill?
Yes.

If Yes, to what degree does the GI Bill cover your school expenses?
100 percent.

What prompted you to return to school?
All the jobs I wanted said I had the experience, but I needed a degree to get the job. So I thought I'd go to school and get the degree I wanted and use it.

Was adjusting to college a challenge after military life? Why?
Yes. Not being in school for over 10 years, I was used to the military way, the structure.

What has your experience been like at Owens Community College?
The first semester was a big awakening. I had to be detailed oriented. I had to be disciplined and really on it. My military background helped me and made it a little easier. Just being disciplined to do the work.

What advice do you have for veterans returning to a college or university?
Do it as soon as possible and use your benefits. Rather than take a job you don't want, come get a degree for the job you have experience for.

How has your military experience made you a better student?
The discipline. If I came to college straight out of high school, I would have failed. I would not have been disciplined to do the work.

What additional comments do you have about your military career, your Owens education or your Owens campus life?
My teachers have helped me a lot. I have a lot of stories to tell from the military and I've been able use them in my sociology and psychology classes.
