Continuing Education for Dental Hygienists/Assistants
Nitrous Oxide Administration/Monitoring
This course meets the new regulations for administration of Nitrous Oxide for the Dental Hygienist in accordance with rule 4715-9-01.2 in the Ohio Administrative Code. The course is the equivalent of a six-hour course which includes a two-hour online didactic course plus another two hours of didactic instruction (four-hour didactic total) and two hours of clinical experience.
Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists
Proper anesthesia knowledge, skills and techniques are critical to today's dental hygienists. This state-approved course combines online study and hands-on clinical at Owens' dental hygiene lab to help you build those skills. The course prepares you to take the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners (NERB) local anesthesia exam, which is required for dental hygienists to become credentialed in Ohio. This course has been approved by the Ohio State Dental Board and follows the guidelines in the Revised Code 4715.231 and the Ohio Administrative Code 4715-9-01(D). Twelve hours of online course work must be completed prior to the first class.
Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA)
Enhance your employability in the dental field by becoming an EFDA. These specially-trained dental assistants and hygienists are permitted to perform advanced remedial intra-oral procedures, commonly taking the operator's position after the dentist is finished removing the diseased tooth structure. Before approval to take EFDA training, you must meet several State of Ohio and Owens requirements. To be considered, you must be a state-certified Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist, or internationally-trained dentist.
Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office
This course helps dental hygienists recognize the symptoms, first aid treatment and possible outcomes for patients who exhibit a variety of emergencies in the dental office, including cardiovascular disease, insulin reactions and epileptic seizures. This course has been approved by the Ohio State Dental Board and follows the guidelines in the Revised code 4715.231 and the Ohio Administrative Code 4715-9-01 (D).
