Local Anesthesia Refresher for the Dental Hygienists

This class is designed to review and/or improve clinical skills for licensed dental professionals.

Dental Hygienists must be currently licensed to administer local anesthesia in the State of Ohio and have successfully completed the written exam for local anesthesia by the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment in compliance with revised code 4715.231 and the Ohio Administrative code 4715-9-01. This class includes two hours of online instruction and 3 hours of clinical practice.

This class will review pain control techniques, anatomic landmarks, local anesthetic agents, prevention of medical emergencies, and injection techniques. Students will participate in clinical practice with instruction and supervision. The clinical portion includes troubleshooting common errors in block and infiltration anesthesia, documentation, and an update on the newest products and practices.

Nitrous Oxide Administration

This course meets the new regulations for Administration of Nitrous Oxide for the Dental Hygienist in accordance with rule 4715-9-01.2 in the Ohio Administrative Code.  Register for this section if you are a LICENSED DENTAL HYGIENIST and taking the course as ADMINISTERING. Participants will be required to submit license before you can attend the class.

The course is the equivalent of a six-hour blended learning course which includes a two-hour online didactic course plus another two hours of didactic instruction (four-hour didactic total) and two hours of clinical experience.  Please register by 2/12/2024 to ensure time for on-line portion of class.  On-line portion will be available on 2/17/24.

Nitrous Oxide Monitoring

This course meets the new regulations for Monitoring of Nitrous Oxide for the  Dental Assistant in accordance with rule 4715-11-02.1 in the Ohio Administrative Code.  Register for this section if you are taking the course as MONITORING.  Participants will be required to submit Dental Assistant certificate or letter of at least 3,000 hours of experience before you can attend the class.

(c) The dental assistant has completed a basic life-support training course certified by the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or the American Safety and Health Institute, and remains current at all times when monitoring N2O-O2 minimal sedation.

Ohio EFDA Training

The OHASP allows dentists and dental hygienists to reach out into traditionally underserved locations like nursing homes, schools in dental health resource shortage areas, Head Start programs, WIC clinics, and other locations to serve populations who may have had difficulty obtaining dental care.

This course will prepare dental hygienists to practice dental hygiene under the oral health access supervision program (OHASP) following the State of Ohio guidelines. The course outlines the laws and rules that allow a dental hygienist to provide dental hygiene services to patients when the supervising dentist is not present. This is an eight-hour online course divided into five modules. It will cover topics such as treatment of geriatric, medically compromised, developmentally disabled and pediatric patients; common oral conditions; medical considerations; medications; behavioral management; recognition of abuse; recognition of what constitutes a medically significant change to a patient’s medical or dental history; infection control; and ethical and legal considerations. This course meets Revised Code 4715.372(B)(2)(b), and all recordkeeping practices outlined in board rule 4715-9-01, Revised Code 4715.361 to 4715.375 required by the Ohio State Dental Board in association with the OHASP.

Oral Health Access Supervision Program (OHASP)

Online Course.  The Oral Health Access Supervision Program (OHASP) allows dental hygienists with additional required education to practice under relaxed supervision in certain designated underserved locations outside of the dental office without the presence of a dentist. The OHASP allows dentists and dental hygienists to reach out into traditionally underserved locations like nursing homes, schools in dental health resource shortage areas, Head Start programs, WIC clinics, and other locations to serve populations who may have had difficulty obtaining dental care.

This course will prepare dental hygienists to practice dental hygiene under the oral health access supervision program (OHASP) following the State of Ohio guidelines. The course outlines the laws and rules that allow a dental hygienist to provide dental hygiene services to patients when the supervising dentist is not present. This is an eight-hour online course divided into five modules. It will cover topics such as treatment of geriatric, medically compromised, developmentally disabled and pediatric patients; common oral conditions; medical considerations; medications; behavioral management; recognition of abuse; recognition of what constitutes a medically significant change to a patient’s medical or dental history; infection control; and ethical and legal considerations.
