Pharmacy Technician Program with Externship

This comprehensive 50-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.  Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, IV flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.  In addition to classroom lecture and labs, this program includes an optional 80-hour clinical externship through a local pharmacy.  To be eligible for the 80-hour clinical externship, students must successfully complete the 50-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements.  The fee for the Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (CPhT) is $129 through the Pharmacy Technician Certified Board (PTCB) or $99 through National Workforce Career Association (NWCA), which is an additional cost. It is not required to participate in the externship to take the CPhT exam.  Book included in course fee.

Phlebotomy Technician

This 90-hour program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipuncture completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, specimen hands-on practice, and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.  Books included in course fee.  Students who complete the Phlebotomy program will have the opportunity to pursue National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam. The cost of this exam is $99 and is a separate cost, which is not included in the student tuition amount.

*Practicum and Clinical Externship Option*

*The 90-hour Phlebotomy program through Owens Community College includes a practicum and an optional 100-hour clinical externship rotation for selected students.  To be eligible for the externship, students must successfully complete (this also includes attendance, participation and attitude) the 90-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screen and meet other requirements.  Only students chosen by the instructor will be eligible for the externship.  Students must be available to work Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day (early AM hours), for 2.5 weeks to complete the 100 hour clinical.  Externships are NOT mandatory to take the examEnrollment in the externship is limited.
