Outstanding Sonography Graduate Anna Dyer Bet on Herself — and Won
Early in her time at Owens Community College, Anna Dyer faced a decision that would define her path to becoming the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program’s outstanding graduate. She could accept an alternate spot and hope for the best, or take a guaranteed acceptance into one of the other sonography programs.
Dyer was set on a career in the sonography field after writing a research paper on a career that interested her while a student at Stateline Christian School in Temperance, Michigan. She chose sonography, in part because of her dad, who is a radiologist at the Fulton County Health Center.
After talking with trusted people around her, Dyer decided to take the alternate spot. A few weeks later, the decision paid off as she was accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program and has excelled ever since.
Dyer credited her dad with steering her toward the field.
“Because of his occupation, he knows how vital sonographers are and encouraged me down this path,” Dyer said. “After doing research for the project, Owens Community College was my first option because of its convenience and academic status.”
Her dad’s influence didn’t stop there, though.
“He has been a tremendous role model, teacher and friend to me, especially throughout college. He has helped me study for each registry that I have taken, helped me with studying different pathologies and given me insight on how I can be a better sonographer in the workplace,” Dyer said.
Dyer said Owens has helped prepare her for life after college and provided her with valuable connections through her cohort and clinicals. She’ll next use that experience at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
