Outstanding OTA Graduate Tava Schroeder Found Her Path by Trusting a Memory
A high school tour of Owens Community College planted a seed for Tava Schroeder. Years later, that memory led her to the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, and to graduating as its outstanding graduate.
Schroeder came to Owens with plans to study radiology. After starting the program, she realized it wasn’t the right fit and took a year to reflect on what was next.
She remembered thinking the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program looked interesting during a tour of Owens while a student at Miller City High School. She decided to give it a chance.
The decision proved to be the right one. Schroeder will graduate in May with her Associate of Applied Science in OTA.
“There was a time after leaving the radiology program when I felt unsure about my future. I knew I wanted to earn a degree, but I wasn’t sure what direction to take,” Schroeder said. “That period of uncertainty made me more determined to find a career I truly enjoyed, which makes reaching this point even more meaningful.”
Coming from a small community and high school, Schroeder appreciated the close-knit feel of a community college.
“Being part of a cohort allowed me to build strong relationships with both my peers and professors. While stepping outside my comfort zone was challenging at times, I’m grateful for those experiences, they’ve helped me grow into a more confident person,” she said.
Throughout her journey, she had a group of friends and family support her through the highs and lows. She also mentioned the motivation from her professors who helped her reach her full potential.
Schroeder’s next step will be taking the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy exam and hopefully working in an outpatient setting or a skilled nursing facility.
