Vice President Thomas Jefferson weighs the perilous prospect of challenging his former ally, President John Adams, for the highest office in the land. Drawn to the quiet rhythms of Monticello—his books, his architecture, his long-sought solitude—he feels the pull of retreat as strongly as the call to serve. Torn between private peace and public duty, he must decide his own future as well as the nation’s. Photography by TJ Barney.
