Owens Outstanding Education Grad Sutter Gets Head Start at Findlay-Area Campus
Sarah Sutter knew from about fifth grade that she wanted to work as an educator. Owens Community College has helped her take a big step toward that goal.
Sutter graduated with an associate degree in Education while also being named the program’s outstanding graduate recipient.
“It’s going to be something nice when I go to apply for jobs, seeing that award on my resume,” Sutter said. “It makes me feel good, too. I worked really hard. Most of the classes were online, but I did homework for six hours a day, just trying to get everything done.”
Sutter, of Ottawa, served as a teacher’s helper beginning in fifth grade, going to different classrooms during her study hall. Her aunt is also a teacher, so she spent a good amount of time in that classroom, too.
When she graduated from Ottawa-Glandorf High School, Sutter decided to attend the college’s Findlay-area Campus. She had visited the campus before while her mom pursued her degree in Early Childhood Education.
“I decided it would be a good way to kick-start my college experience,” Sutter said. “It was an easy path to just get something going.”
As an Owens student, Sutter did one of her placements on campus at the Early Learning Center, a five-star Step Up to Quality child care center. After her placement was done, she continued working there after being hired.
“I get a lot of hands-on experience, I get to apply what I’m learning,” Sutter said.
Sutter has already started her studies at Bowling Green State University, working toward her intervention special Bachelor of Science in Education. She’s confident her decision to take all of her general education and pre-requisite classes at Owens will set her up for future success.
She said the variety of classes and helpfulness of the instructors make going to Owens a no-brainer for anyone.
“Owens is a great place to start,” Sutter said. “You can get some basic general education classes, it’s an affordable route.”
