Owens Grad Kaitlyn Maxwell Finds Success Close to Home
Kaitlyn Maxwell left home in Rossford originally to pursue a degree at Kent State University in eastern Ohio. It turned out she didn’t need to go nearly that far to find what she was looking for.
Maxwell will graduate in spring 2025 with her associate degree in Health Information Technology. She also earned the Northwest Ohio Health Information Management Association New Graduate Award.
“I’m just happy to be recognized for the work I’ve been doing,” Maxwell said. “There’s been a lot of class work and making sure work and school is being achieved, getting all the projects done.”
Maxwell had worked previously in retail but didn’t want a career directly in the public. Combine that with an interest in the healthcare industry and she feels a career in the health information technology is the best of both worlds.
“I looked around for careers that you could do from home,” Maxwell said. “I can be in the comfort of my own place but still interact with people over emails and by phone and go to conferences.”
Maxwell credits good organization and working on a schedule with a planner for her success.
Professionals in the health information management field act as a liaison between clinical staff, operations and administration. They acquire, analyze and protect traditional and digital medical information vital to providing quality patient care.
Maxwell said the ability to go into different jobs and fields makes her degree all that much more valuable.
“You can go into so many different fields with just this one degree,” Maxwell said.
Maxwell had a couple of starts and stops to her academic career. Now that she’s almost done, she said it feels “great.”
“I’ve never been one to want to go to school, so being done is a weight off of my shoulders. Once you put your mind to it, you’re going to power through and get it done. You might as well do the best you can instead of just gliding through,” Maxwell said.
