Long Days, Long Nights and a Dream, Mya Weimerskirch Earned Every Bit of Outstanding Graduate Honor
For Mya Weimerskirch, balancing a full-time job as a patient care technician while being a Health Information Technology (HIT) student taught her valuable lessons in time management, resilience and dedication.
All of those long days and nights have paid off as Weimerskirch will graduate this May with her Associate of Applied Science in HIT as the program’s outstanding graduate.
“There were definitely challenging moments, especially managing long shifts and coursework, but those experiences pushed me to grow. Earning my degree represents not just academic success, but the hard work and perseverance it took to get here,” Weimerskirch said.
Weimerskirch graduated from Fostoria High School in 2020 and chose to attend Owens based on its strong HIT program, which aligned with her goals and passion for helping others. Now on the other side of her experience at Owens, she’s grateful for how it prepared her for the next step in her career.
Weimerskirch received support at home from her mother, who helped her stay motivated and focused with her belief and support.
“She has always encouraged me to keep pushing forward, even during challenging times,” Weimerskirch said.
At school, she credited HIT professor Teresa McGaharan for her guidance and encouragement.
“She took the time to make sure I understood the material and pushed me to do my best, which gave me more confidence in my abilities,” Weimerskirch said.
After graduation, Weimerskirch plans on obtaining her RHIT certification and beginning a career in the health information field, with an interest in risk management or a registry role.
