Board of Trustees Outstanding Student Recognized with Janell Lang Award

When it came time for Olivia Wesley to take the step in her higher education, she knew the dental hygiene program at Owens was where she belonged. This year’s Janell Lang Outstanding Service Award recipient credits not only her instructors, but her fellow classmates for her success.

“I have felt guided and set up for success,” said Wesley, who was also recognized as a Board of Trustees Outstanding Student this spring. The Janell Lang Award recognizes academic achievement, community and professional service, high professional standards, and strengthens the ideals and images of health professions.

During her time at Owens, Wesley was involved in the American Dental Hygiene Association as both the Vice President and President.

Upon graduation, the Toledo native plans to stay in the area and seek employment as a dental hygienist within the community.

Opportunities Lead Board of Trustees Honoree to Owens Community College

Opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom led Olivia Wesley to Owens Community College. This year, the Board of Trustees recognized her for exceptional student leadership and student life involvement. “There have been so many opportunities to get involved and I really feel Owens was the best option for me,” Wesley said.

Wesley, a Toledo School for the Arts graduate, said the Dental Hygiene Program was the primary reason she knew Owens would be the right fit. Once she was on campus, the faculty supported her and her journey in the program. “The program, both faculty and students, are all hardworking and passionate individuals and they have inspired me throughout my journey here at Owens,” said Wesley.

The May 2022 Dental Hygiene graduate has held both the Vice President and President positions for the American Dental Hygiene Association student chapter. She is currently about to implement a program that involves providing free dental screenings and referrals to over 30 three-year-old children in the Toledo area. She took on the project without hesitation and hopes it creates a legacy for the program.

Upon graduation, Wesley plans to stay in the area and work within the community.
