Resources for STEM Students
Student Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to participate in a Cooperative Work/Field Experience and receive academic credit, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking student in the School of Science, Technology and Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
- Find a co-op or internship that is related to your major (through own initiative or with assistance from the internship manager, faculty or program chair)
- Maintain a 2.5/4.0 grade point average.
- Note: Employers may require a higher grade point average.
- Have earned 30 credit hours towards the academic major at the time of application or, if a transfer student, completed one semester at Owens Community College.
- Enroll in a Cooperative Work/Field Experience course (a 291 or 293 extension course). Depending on the student’s major, this course would be listed as:
- CIV 291 for a major in Architectural Engineering Technology
- CAD 291 for a major in CAD Technology
- ENV 291 for a major in Environmental Science
- ALT 291 for a major in Alternative Energy
- WLD 291 for a major in Welding
- EET 291 for a major in Electrical and Computer Technologies
- LTM 291 for a major in Life and Natural Sciences
- SKT 291 for a major in the Skilled Trades
- AUT 291 for a major in Automotive Technology
- DSL 291 for a major in Diesel Technology
- IST 293 for a major in Database Management and Administration, Computer Programming Technology, Information Systems Technology
- In some instances, a student may be able to substitute work experience to receive academic credit for the internship. The program chair and faculty facilitator must approve the substitution.
- Complete the necessary prerequisite courses (check with your academic advisor or program chair).
- Receive approval from faculty coordinator, the academic department chair and/or the STEM Internship Manager.
Student Responsibilities
It is the student’s responsibility to understand and abide by all internship requirements and procedures. If students need clarification, they should contact the STEM Internship manager.

Workplace Responsibilities
Students working an internship represent Owens Community College and as such should conduct themselves ethically and professionally and abide by the Student Code of Conduct (PDF) and the Internship Program guidelines. Students are being evaluated throughout the internship and the evaluation will be reflected in the final grade of the internship. Your workplace responsibilities include:
- Work with your supervisor to formulate a weekly schedule that works with your class schedule.
- Complete the on-site weekly hour log and have it signed by the immediate supervisor.
- Complete an evaluation form regarding your experience in the workplace. It will help the program get better.
- Be good ambassadors for Owens and on behalf of future Owens students.
- Be open to positive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- Be professional in how you resolve issues and conflict.
- Be a productive and responsible employee.
- Be compliant with the dressing code, policies and procedures set by your employer.
- Be engaged and proactive.
Classroom Responsibilities
Your classroom responsibilities include:
- Bring the knowledge you have gained in the workplace to the classroom and vice versa.
- Complete all internship work assignments.
- Seek to address any issue related to work environment or work assignments by informing the employer and internship manager in due course.
- Notify the internship manager of any significant changes in your status which may affect your performance as a participant in the internship program.
